Community Road Safety Walk & Snow and Ice

Community Road Safety Walk in Summerside

A big thank you to the residents of Summerside who came out with me this weekend for a community road safety walk. Residents showed us spots in their neighbourhood where road safety is a concern. I also really appreciate my City colleagues from traffic safety for joining us today, so that we were able to have a discussion that combined technical knowledge with community experience. While permanent traffic controls can't be installed overnight, this is the start of an important conversation, and relationships, that I am keen to continue.

I heard a lot about road safety on the campaign trail, which true, it's not going to be resolved by signage alone. It requires a slew of efforts including environmental design, education and awareness, behavioural change, school involvement, and community mobilization and partnership. The Provincial government's recent photo radar review is going to significantly impact the funding required to implement all the creative and innovative solutions we need at the street and neighborhood level, both temporary interventions as well as permanent fixtures. Remedying this will not happen overnight, but over time.

Snow and Ice

Driving around over the weekend, I also saw many people clearing ice from sidewalks and driveways. I know that road and sidewalk conditions are not ideal and that community sandboxes are being depleted at a faster rate than we've ever seen because of the unprecedented level of ice. It's crucial that we plan for events like this - and work towards climate resilience for our city. I look forward to digging into some of the motions that my colleagues like Councillor Erin Rutherford are working on to improve service in residential streets. I want sidewalks, and other public pathways, to be part of this conversation. In the meantime, we're refilling those sandboxes as fast as we can. Thank you for your patience and partnership in making our streets and sidewalks safer for everyone.
